In 1940, as the German army advanced, they fled the occupied zone and made their way through Spain. In 1941 he and his parents reached New York on a banana freighter after a six-week crossing. Brombert later said they were "the bananas in the hold."

	~~Drafted into the~~ U.S. ~~Army, he trained at Camp Ritchie as an interrogator in French and German~~. He ~~landed in Normandy about two days after D-Day~~, ~~fought in France~~, and was present for the liberation of Paris. He later served in the Hürtgen Forest fighting. After Germany’s surrender he worked as an interpreter and interrogator in denazification work before leaving the army at the end of 1946.		The Army drafted him in May 1943 in New York while he was not yet a U.S. Citizen. He became a citizen that September and, during service, changed his surname from Bromberg to Brombert.

	After the war Brombert studied at Yale University ~~and became a scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature~~, ~~teaching at Yale~~ and Princeton ~~and serving~~ as ~~Princeton’s~~ Henry Putnam University Professor.		Brombert fought in France and was in Paris at the liberation. Front-line work meant checking minefields, enemy positions, and other tactical details that prisoners and civilians often got wrong from fear or confusion. After a night under fire on the bluffs above Omaha Beach, he told himself to win the war without loving it.

			After Germany's surrender he worked as an interpreter and interrogator on denazification in Germany. Occupation authorities sometimes left Nazi officials in place to keep cities running, a compromise he later described with frustration. He left the Army at the end of 1946.

			Brombert studied at Yale University (B.A. 1948, Ph.D. 1953) and taught there before moving to Princeton in 1975 as Henry Putnam University Professor. He married the translator Beth Archer in 1950. For decades he kept wartime service out of the classroom and defined himself by teaching and scholarship; his memoir ''Trains of Thought'' appeared in 2002. He died at his home in Princeton, New Jersey, on 26 November 2024.
