His naturalization petition records that he enlisted at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York, on 31 July 1942, and identifies his earlier residence and civilian work as a leather belt maker. Hauser served with the 61st Signal Radio Intercept Company as a radio operator before transferring to the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie. He completed class 20 in the German section and qualified as a German document examiner. His languages were German, French, Italian, and Hungarian. He shipped overseas aboard the RMS ''Queen Mary'' and served in the European Theater. He received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy during the Rhineland Campaign.
