[[Schmand, Delbert A. (0392763)|Delbert Schmand]] was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1937 with a degree in engineering. Having worked a full day, William Schmand complained about “indigestion” in the early evening hours. Schmand was inducted into the University of Arkansas College of Engineering Hall of Fame and appointed a charter member of the Advisory Council to the College. Since jobs were still scarce and employment not readily available, He went to work as a general helper in his father’s company: He assisted in making candy, wrapping, delivering, and anything that needed done. This lasted for eight months until he went to work on May 15, 1938 for the newly reopened Little Rock District Corps of Engineers. December 7, 1941, the “day of infamy,” occurred, and Del was called to active service, He was stationed at Camp Ritchie] Maryland when he received word of his father’s death. He suffered a severe heart attack and died on March 7, 1944. He was almost seventy-three years old. Army during World War II and then in the Army reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1965. He retired from the Corps of Engineers after thirty-eight years of service. Part of his time working for the Corps of Engineers included supervising design of locks and dams on the the Arkansas River. He was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and placed in the gallery of distinguished employees. Following retirement he became Director of the Little Rock Port Authority until 1977 when he became President of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He is a member of Theta Tau, Chi Epsilon, and Tau Beta Pi (Eminent Engineer - Syracuse University). Del passed away at the age of 88 on September 9, 2003.
