After imprisonment at Sachsenhausen following Kristallnacht, he reached Britain as a refugee on 23 May 1939 and lived at Kitchener Camp, Richborough. He sailed from Liverpool on the ''Antonia'' on 30 May 1940 for Canada and then the United States.

He received a Military Intelligence Division certificate dated 26 September 1945 and an honorable discharge on 26 October 1945 as a private first class.
