George Jellinek (December 22, 1919 – January 16, 2010) was the Hungarian-born host of The Vocal Scene, a weekly syndicated radio feature produced by WQXR radio of New York City. Born in Hungary on December 22 1919 and passed away January 16 2010, he was the Hungarian-born host of The Vocal Scene, a weekly syndicated radio feature produced by WQXR radio of New York City. Born in Újpest, Budapest, Hungary, Jellinek was a longtime resident of the New York City area.
George Jellinek was born on 22 December 1919 in Újpest, near Budapest, Hungary. Drafted at Fort Dix on 23 February 1942, he trained in the Air Corps radio school (Scott Field) and later entered the Army Specialized Training Program, studying Italian and Central European subjects at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He became a U.S. citizen on 20 September 1943 in Philadelphia.


In July 1943, Jellinek attended ASTP Student (Italian) as Pfc at Lafayette College in Easton, PA.
In early 1944 he transferred to Camp Ritchie (Class 16), graduating on 5 April 1944 as a German linguist, and was later associated with MII Team 426-G attached to XV Corps. He also passed through Fort Benning OCS-related training in the wartime path recorded in his memoir.


Jellinek served in the United States Army and trained in Military Intelligence at Camp Ritchie in the mountains of Maryland, thus making him one of the Ritchie Boys.
After the war Jellinek became a leading classical-music broadcaster in New York, hosting WQXR’s weekly ''The Vocal Scene'' from 1969 to 2004 and appearing on Metropolitan Opera radio intermissions. He died on 16 January 2010.
 
Over three decades, from 1969 to 2004, he steadily interviewed opera singers and other figures of classical music on his show, and presented comparative recordings of arias and excerpts with commentary which the New York Times deemed "encyclopedic". George worked as translator. He was also familiar to radio audiences for his appearances during intermissions on the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts.
