Kurt Meyer was born in Germany on 19 February 1922. He escaped Germany in 1936 and came to the United States.
 
A fluent German speaker, Meyer trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 16) and served with Patton's Third Army. His prisoner-of-war work included interviewing German captives and screening them for members of the SS. He also held enlisted Army serial number 36648641 before receiving officer serial number 0552568.
