Guy Stern was born Günther Stern in Hildesheim, Germany, on 14 January 1922. He grew up in a Jewish family under increasingly violent Nazi persecution. In 1937, at age fifteen, he was sent alone to the United States in the hope that he could establish himself and help his family escape.
