From 1923 he attended the Institut Le Rosey in Rolle, Switzerland, where he became fluent in French and German, and he later attended Eaglebrook School, Choate, and Deerfield Academy in New England, spending summers on his uncle's farm in New Mexico. In 1928 he attended the Experimental College of the University of Wisconsin for one year, and in 1929 he entered Harvard, where he wrote for the ''Harvard Advocate'' and graduated in 1932.
