Reinhart Theodore Kowallis was born on 27 May 1910 in River Heights, Cache County, Utah, to Karl August Kowallis and Justina Brenner, German immigrants who married in Utah. He married Norma in February 1942; they lived on Army posts while he served as a first lieutenant. | |||
Kowallis trained at [[Camp Ritchie]], Maryland, in [[:Category:Class 18|Class 18]]. In January 1945 he left the West Coast for Pacific duty (family letters place him aboard a troop transport out of Seattle bound for Hawaii) while Norma and their daughter stayed with her parents near Ogden, Utah. Husband and wife wrote almost daily across the Pacific through 1945; those letters were later compiled by their son Bart J. Kowallis. | |||
