Hubert M. “Red” Lewis earned a chemistry degree at Duke University and did graduate work at North Carolina State before joining Duke’s coaching staff; as an undergraduate he had been a Southern Conference track standout. Entering the service as a private with the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command in Florida, he was commissioned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in July 1943, trained further at Camp Ritchie (Class 11), and shipped to the Pacific.
Lewis served as officer in charge of the G-2 unit of the 25th Infantry Division from Luzon to Nagoya. The Duke Alumni Register reported that after about forty months overseas he returned as a major with an Air Medal and a Bronze Star with oak-leaf cluster.
