Albert Hammond Staton Jr. was born on 1 April 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia. He passed the Georgia Tech admission exam at age 15, earned a B.S. in chemical engineering there in 1941, and married Mary Jane Wilson on 2 April 1943.
Staton served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to March 1946.
