On 16 May 1942, Hans graduated from City College, NY (BA, History). He was a long-time professor (and professor emeritus) at Brooklyn College from 1950 to 1998. He also taught as a distinguished professor of history at Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
Hans L. Trefousse was born on 18 December 1921 in Frankfurt, Germany, the son of a German Jewish physician and World War I veteran. The family left Germany in 1936. He graduated from City College of New York with a B.A. in history on 16 May 1942 and enlisted in the Army on 17 May 1943.


He continued to teach at Brooklyn College and published many books on the Reconstruction era, including biographies of previously maligned Radical Republicans Benjamin F.
Fluent in German, French, and English, he trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 8), was commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps, and was attached to the 116th Infantry Regiment for the Normandy landings. As an IPW interrogator he served through the liberation of Paris and later campaigns; he received the Bronze Star.


Hans Louis Trefousse (December 18, 1921–January 8, 2010) was a German-American author and historian of the Reconstruction Era and World War II. Some historians consider his most influential book The Radical Republicans: Lincoln's Vanguard for Racial Justice (1969), which disagreed with the dominant historical narrative of the time regarding Reconstruction, arguing instead that Reconstruction was a failed attempt "to bring racial justice to the South." In total Trefousse authored over twenty books. He later served as OIC with IPW Team 33.
After the war Trefousse became a leading Civil War scholar, teaching at Brooklyn College from 1950 to 1998 (later professor emeritus) and at the CUNY Graduate Center, and appearing as a CNN analyst. He died on 8 January 2010 on Staten Island.
 
He married Rachelle Friedlander two years later, and they had a son and daughter who survived them. After encountering racist incidents in New York City, he switched focus, publishing a biography, Ben Butler: The South Called Him Beast! He gained media attention during Bill Clinton's impeachment for drawing comparisons to Johnson's impeachment.
 
Trefousse was a Ritchie Boy.
