Leonard Edmondson was born in Sacramento, California, on 12 June 1916. He studied at Los Angeles City College and then at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a B.A. in 1940 and an M.A. in 1942.


Edmondson was born on June 12, 1916, in Sacramento, California. He attended the Los Angeles City College and then the University of California, Berkeley where he earned both his B.A. And M.A.. He went on to serve in the Military Intelligence Corps (United States Army) from 1942 through 1946.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Corps in Europe from 1942 to 1946, training at Camp Ritchie (Class 19) and later working with MII teams. Wartime exposure to modern European art—especially Paul Klee—and spare-time visits to the Louvre while still stationed in France helped turn him from figurative work toward non-objective painting.


When he left the Army and returned to California he began his teaching career at Pasadena City College. He later taught at the Otis Art Institute and California State University, Los Angeles. In 1962, Edmondson was a founding member of the [https://www.laprintmakingsociety.org/about/ Los Angeles Printmaking Society]. In 1973, his book "Etching" was published.
Returning to California in 1947, he began teaching at Pasadena City College and developed a Surrealist / Abstract Expressionist vocabulary in watercolor and printmaking. Awards included Tiffany Fellowships (1953, 1955) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1960). He published the treatise ''Etching'' in 1970 and was a founding member and president of the California Printmakers Society. He died in West Covina, California, on 23 July 2002.
 
In 1943, while stationed at Fort Sumner, in a letter to his first wife, he expressed his ambition to "study under a top-notch artist" as a path toward becoming an art teacher, and "prescient conviction about painting", amongst more mundane concerns. Edmondson became life long friends with classmate Ynez Johnston.
