Henry R. Mahler (12 November 1921–1983) was a Vienna-born biochemist and Camp Ritchie Class 13 document examiner (IPW team 62) who later taught at Indiana University.

Biography

Henry R. Mahler was born on 12 November 1921 in Vienna, Austria. He arrived in the United States in 1938 and worked his way through Swarthmore College, graduating with honors in 1943. He entered Camp Ritchie Class 13 (IPW German) on 30 October 1943, graduated on 23 December 1943 as a German document examiner, and was promoted to technician third grade on 24 April 1944; roster records associate him with IPW team 62. Family accounts place him interrogating German prisoners from Normandy through the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war Mahler studied biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, where he met and married Annemarie Ettinger, also from Vienna. He received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, worked at the Enzyme Institute there, and in 1955 moved to Indiana University, Bloomington, becoming professor and later Research Professor of Chemistry and Neural Sciences. He was known for research on mitochondria and related topics. Mahler died in 1983 at age 62. On 23 May 1944, Hq MIS ETOUSA Special Orders No. 135 placed IPW Team 62 on detached service with FID. On 2 June 1944, Hq MIS ETOUSA Special Orders No. 145 attached IPW Team 62 to Third U.S. Army for duty with Hq Third U.S. Army.
