Frank C. Hauser was born Franz Karl Hauser in Vienna on 4 October 1911 into a Jewish family. He completed four years of commercial school in Austria and, probably after the Anschluss of 1938, left the country. He sailed from Liverpool on the SS ''Georgic'' and arrived in the United States on 27 March 1940; in October 1940 he was living in New York City and working as a leather belt maker.
