Andre Sussman was born on 5 December 1920 in Cairo, Egypt, to French parents. He studied in Paris, including work toward a bachelor’s degree and postgraduate English study at the Sorbonne, and in 1939–1940 served as a liaison officer with the French Army as a second lieutenant.

Naturalized as a U.S. Citizen in January 1943, he trained at [[Camp Ritchie]], Maryland ([[Class 12]]), and joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), later using the name André Surmain. After the war he became a noted New York restaurateur as owner of Lutèce.

Sussman died in 2018.
