Josef H. Bienstock was born on 12 September 1920 in Dortmund, Germany, to Jewish parents born in Austria. After grammar and high school in Germany he fled via Prague, Belgium, France, Spain, and Portugal, arriving in the United States with his family. He attended a rabbinical academy in New York and helped with the family’s chicken farming in New Jersey.
