Henry Elwell Funk II was born on 22 March 1917 in Philadelphia. He graduated from Haverford College in June 1943. In March 1943 he had applied for a Navy interpreter commission but was refused because he had not yet graduated; after Haverford he entered Army language and intelligence channels and trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 13).
