[[Salinger, Herman (0913812)|Herman Salinger]] was a Ritchie Boy. He was born on December 23, 1905 in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was an American educator, writer, who was a Recipient Badge of Honor Poetry prize, 1942, Roanoke-Chowan (North Carolina) Poetry award, 1963. After a couple of years at Leland Stanford, teaching German and studying for an M.A. (1929) in Germanic languages, Herman spent two years divided between the Universities of Berlin and Cologne. He finished his work at Yale for the Ph.D. in 1937, after teaching German at Princeton, 1932-35. Later he taught several years at the University of Wisconsin until he entered the Army Air Corps as 2nd Lieutenant in 1942. He stayed in until Jan. 14, 1946, and was promoted, Mar. 17, 1943, to 1st Lieutenant, and Oct. 11, 1944, to Captain, in the A.C. During the four years Herman served as instructor, Ground School Headquarters., A.A.F. Flying School, Kelly Field, Tex. (1942), instructor and Cadet Tactical Officer, Ground Sch. (1942-43); Staff and faculty, Military Intelligence Training Center, Camp Ritchie, Md. (1943-45); G-2 Sec., 12th Army Group, Verdun, France and Wiesbaden, Germany; and G-2 Sec., Intelligence Operations, Seventh Army Headquarters, Augsburg and Heidelberg. The latter place was an ideal spot for one of our very few poets, who for years has been publishing in Poetry° A Magazine of Verse, and elsewhere. He contributed to "Princeton Verse Between Two Wars," edited by Allen Tate. His translation of Heine's "Germany: A Winter's Tale," a book-length poem, came out in 1944 (L B Fischer, New York) and his many translations from French and German have appeared in Fantasy, Poet-Lore, and the New Mexico Ouarterly Review, 1939-47. In 1942 the Univ. of Wisconsin Press issued his "Index to the Poems of Rainer Maria Rilke " Many of his book reviews have appeared in Monatshefte and other journals, 1935-47, and articles on Heine, Grillparzer, Storm and Rilke in Modern Language Notes (June 1938, Apr. 1942); Monatshefte (May 1939, May 1941, Mar. 1940); and German Ouarterly (May 1940). For a year he was a contributor to and assoc. editor of The University of Kansas City Review, and from May 1946 to June 1947 Asst. of Foreign Languages and Literatures en the University. He has just been called as Assoc. of German to the faculty of Grinnell College. He has been a member of the Mod. since 1932 and more recently also of Modern Language Teachers of the Central West, and the Reserve Officers Assoc.
