RB John Francis Rieger, was born April 23 1917 and passed away June 9 2012. From a newspaper clipping: Captain [[Rieger, John F. (01013512)|John Rieger]]'s heroic performance in the initial onslaught on Fortress Europe has won him the Bronze Star. Despite terrific Nazi fire of all types, Rieger performed his duties.
John Francis Rieger was born on 23 April 1917 in New York City. After Bryant High School he attended Furman University and earned a B.S. at Mount St. Mary’s College (1939) and an M.A. at Fordham (1941). Entering the Army in October 1941, he trained with cavalry at Fort Riley and armor at Fort Knox, received a lieutenant’s commission, and served as an instructor at Camp Ritchie ([[:Category:Class 3|Class 3]]) before going overseas.


Rieger attended Furman University in South Carolina and Mount St. After military service, John worked for the State Department. Attached are some photos of John
Fluent in German from his parents’ household, he interrogated German POWs and took part in landings in Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and southern France. A wartime citation credited his bravery as an intelligence officer in the initial assault on southern Italy with the Bronze Star. He finished the war as a major.


He showed unusual bravery and ability as an intelligence officer with the first Yank outfit to land on the tip of southern Italy. Graduated from Bryant High School, New York City, Capt. Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, Maryland where he was graduated in the class of 1939.
Postwar he worked briefly in opinion research, then joined the State Department—security posts in Germany, refugee relief, consul general in Salzburg, and administrative assignments from Tel Aviv to Bangkok—retiring in 1977. He died on 9 June 2012.


He later attended Fordham University, from where he obtained his Master's Degree, immediately after entering U.S. He was with the cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas and from there he was stationed with the armored forces at Fort Knox, Kentucky, receiving his commission as lieutenant. He was sent to Camp Ritchie, Maryland as an instructor and from there went overseas.

In reference of earning the Bronze Star, his family passes along that he stopped US anti-aircraft guns from shooting their own US planes. He was a Regional Security Officer in Germany, then South America. Then he was a General Manager for a Refugee Relief Program in DC.
 
Later, he was the Consul General in Salzburg, Austria, followed by an Administrative Officer in Tel Aviv. After that, he was a Senior State Department Representative in National Military Command Center, for the DOD at the Pentagon. He was then Deputy Director, Office of Munitions Control, Department of State in DC.


Later, he was Counselor for Administration in Sudan, followed by Counselor for Administration in India and later Thailand, before finally retiring.
