Victor A. Rugala was born in Mayfield, Pennsylvania, one of eight brothers and one sister raised by his widowed mother. He enlisted in the Army on 12 March 1942. After basic training he served with a finance detachment at Lowry Field, Denver, graduated Officer Candidate School as a second lieutenant, and worked in the Army Ordnance Fiscal Section in Cincinnati before selection for Camp Ritchie. | |||
Overseas he was assigned to General Eisenhower’s headquarters (SHAEF) at Versailles and then to General Clay’s Office of Military Government in Berlin. Fluent in Russian, he served as liaison officer to Soviet forces in the Allied sector and later, as a captain, as chief of the Visitors Bureau escorting dignitaries in Berlin. | |||
After the war he settled in New Jersey, worked as an accounting supervisor at Ford Motor Company until 1971, and later prepared taxes for the IRS and H&R Block. Rugala died on 21 July 2007 in New Brunswick at age 92. | |||
