He received a Ph.D. in history at Yale in 1941 and the following year was an assistant in instruction at Yale and also taught at the Hartford Junior College. He then became an instructor in history at Wellesley, continuing there until he entered service as a Private in the summer of 1943. He was at Camp Lee, Va., for a time, was later at Camp Ritchie, Md., then stationed in England.
