Arthur Field was born in 1910 in Austria as Arthur Fischl. He later emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the Army at Albany, New York, on 14 September 1943 as a private (ASN 32944674).
 
Field trained at the Military Intelligence Training Center at [[Camp Ritchie]], Maryland (roster [[Class 21]]; family sources also associate him with Class 22). NARA personal-history material notes his name change from Fischl and German-language course attendance. He was assigned as a document examiner attached to Third Army rather than to a numbered IPW, MII, OB, or PI team, and was later promoted to staff sergeant.
