He graduated with an engineering degree from Stanford then enlisted in the US Army, where he was sent to West Point to become a combat engineer. He later gave up his acting career to enter World War II, as a captain with the Corps of Army Engineers. Ira returned to California after the war and started a furniture manufacturing company called Barzilay that produced high quality trendy modern designs that are now known as Mid-Century Modern.
