On December 1, 1943, he returned from temporary duty, and on February 1, 1944 he was "alerted. His parents were rounded up in 1939 and sent to Gurs by the French for being German Jews. A Bronze Star citation identifies him as a technician third grade serving as an operations sergeant in the S-2 section of T Force, 12th Army Group, where he prepared intelligence target information and translated enemy documents.
