Richard W. Seltzer (5 June 1923–2014) was a U.S.-born Ritchie Boy who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 22 as a photo interpreter and later attended Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning.

Biography

Richard Warren Seltzer was born on 5 June 1923 in Washington, D.C. After Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) German study at the University of Pennsylvania, he served with the 422nd Infantry Regiment of the 106th Infantry Division at Camp Atterbury before orders transferred him to the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie.

Seltzer arrived at Camp Ritchie on 16 August 1944 and was assigned to Company G, 2nd Training Battalion, for Photo Interpretation (Class 22). Language screening placed him in the PI track rather than prisoner interrogation; coursework included combat intelligence, map work, German and British army organization, and field problems in the Catoctin Mountains. He later recalled the camp’s rotating “Ban Day” rest schedule under Brigadier General Banfill. After completing the PI course he was selected for Infantry Officer Candidate School and left for Fort Benning in December 1944; he was commissioned a second lieutenant on 24 April 1945 (ASN 01334639). Bernard Serotta, who also came from Ritchie, was among his OCS classmates.

On 14 July 1945, Seltzer graduated from SGTC 14 (PI).
