Stanley E. Carnarius was born on 6 July 1924 in Peoria, Illinois. He had a gift for languages—German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese—and studied them for one year at the University of Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Army in Philadelphia as a private.

Carnarius trained at [[Camp Ritchie]] with [[:Category:Class 18|Class 18]] (13 April – 10 June 1944) and [[:Category:Class 19|Class 19]] (16 May – 13 July 1944), then as a German order-of-battle specialist with [[:Category:Class 21|Class 21]] (21 July – 18 September 1944). The course covered photo interpretation and map-making, including turning aerial photographs into contour maps for use in the field. He later said the German language work at Ritchie was judged by whether a soldier could actually communicate, not by reciting specialized vocabulary.

In October 1944 he was alerted for overseas, transferred to the Detached Enlisted Men's List, and promoted to staff sergeant. Carnarius went to Europe with [[Team OB 38|OB Team 38]], attached to the 87th Infantry Division. The team's order-of-battle work meant tracking German units, checking that picture against prisoner interrogations, and keeping the G-2 map current. During the Battle of the Bulge he rode blacked-out night convoys and used high-level intelligence, including the commanding general's correspondence, to keep the situation map accurate. After Germany surrendered, the division was slated for the Pacific; the war ended before that move. He finished his service as a first lieutenant.
