Rudolph (Rudolf) Schattner was born in Vienna on 3 March 1916 into a Jewish family. After the Nazi takeover of Austria in 1938 he had to abandon his law studies at the University of Vienna and fled; in November 1941 he sailed from Lisbon to New York City, and in the United States he worked as a merchant.

Schattner was drafted at Newark, New Jersey, on 14 November 1942 and took basic training at the Infantry Replacement Training Center at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. In January 1943 he was assigned to Company A of the 101st Infantry Battalion (the "Austrian Battalion") at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and in March he volunteered for transfer to the 75th Infantry Division at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he served in the headquarters of the 290th Infantry Regiment and specialized as a radio technician.
