In his letter recommending Mandel for emeritus status, Chiappinelli wrote. He became a member of the Society of Distinguished Teachers at SMHS in 2001. The award was presented at the annual banquet of the society, held on 16 April in Philadelphia in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Mandel became a United States citizen in 1944.
