In May 1945, he served as official interpreter for surrender of all southern. John H. Brunswick was born Hans Braunschweig in Bocholt, Germany. He left the country and made a new life in the United States before entering the U.S. Army. His native German and familiarity with the society that produced the Wehrmacht made him a strong candidate for military intelligence work. At Camp Ritchie, Brunswick trained in the interrogation of prisoners of war. The course taught German-speaking soldiers to identify military units, read documents and insignia, question prisoners systematically, and turn their answers into reports of immediate value to combat commands. Brunswick served much of the European campaign with an IPW team attached to the Free French 2nd Armored Division under XV Corps. Working across national and language lines, he interpreted and interrogated as the Allied formation advanced into German-held territory. His role placed him between American headquarters, French troops, and German prisoners. In May 1945 Brunswick was selected as the official interpreter for one of the final major capitulations in Europe. General Hermann Foertsch signed the surrender of German Army Group G to General Jacob L. Devers, and Brunswick interpreted the proceedings. The former Hans Braunschweig thus helped communicate the formal defeat of a German army group to an American commander. After the war, Brunswick returned to civilian enterprise in the United States. He became a manufacturer of plastic household goods, applying the organizational and practical abilities of his wartime years to postwar industry.
