He began his career teaching French and Spanish after graduating from City College in 1934. He murrow's original team in the 1940's, died at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan yesterday morning. He had gone to Europe in 1941 with the War Information Office as editor of the Western European desk. He joined the Army in 1943, was assigned to Military Intelligence and covered the invasion of southern France in 1944. Schoenbrun enlisted in the Army in 1943 and became a World War II correspondent covering North Africa through to the liberation of France, for which he was decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour. He joined the Columbia Broadcasting System in May 1947, after working for Government news services during World War II. He murrow appointed him chief Paris correspondent for CBS News in 1947. He was the only American correspondent inside the French garrison at the historic 1954 battle of Dien Bien Phu won by North Vietnam and the first broadcast journalist to report from North Vietnam. He , the only journalist to broadcast from Vietnam when he described the French debacle at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, suffered a heart attack Monday and died in a New York City hospital. He worked as a author of several best-selling books, Schoenbrun left CBS in 1964 in a policy dispute and most recently had been a news analyst for Independent Network News. From the 1960s through the 1980s, Schoenbrun served as a news analyst for WNEW Radio in New York (now WBBR) and other Metromedia broadcast properties, and later for crosstown WPIX Television and its Independent Network News operation. In the mid-1970s, he served as a foreign affairs analyst for a short-lived public television channel in Los Angeles. Schoenbrun died of a heart attack in New York City, at the age of 73.
