Louis V. Marsh (1920 – 16 March 2005) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States; Catholic) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 15.
Biography
Louis V. Marsh (1920–2005) was a U.S. Army officer and Ritchie Boy. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he arrived at Camp Ritchie on 4 January 1944 for class 15, a French course. His Camp Ritchie certificate records that he completed the course on 3 March 1944. He was released from Camp Ritchie on 10 April 1944 and embarked on the SS Queen Mary for Scotland. After additional training in Britain, he was assigned to MII Team 407, attached to the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division.
Marsh was later promoted to first lieutenant and served as officer in charge of MII Team 478G, attached to XXI Corps. His Silver Star citation credits him with gallantry near Laneuville, France, on 16 September 1944. It states that, while serving with MII Team 407, he accompanied his section into the town despite sniper and sporadic machine-gun fire, helped drive the remaining German force into a central locality, and participated in an action that killed three enemy soldiers, wounded one, captured eighteen, destroyed a machine-gun position, and captured additional equipment.
The 137th Infantry Regiment after-action report describes the related operation involving a four-man party led by Captain George T. Schneider and including Lieutenant Marsh; its narrative dates that action to 15 September 1944 and records the same casualties, prisoners, and machine-gun position. Marsh died on 16 March 2005.
