In chemical engineering there in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to March ~~1946—first~~ in chemical munitions at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, then ~~with~~ military intelligence training at Camp Ritchie (~~classes~~ 22 and 24)~~, and later as an intelligence officer with~~ the 77th Infantry Division in the ~~Philippines and~~ on Kerama Retto, Ie Shima, and Okinawa. ~~He was promoted to captain on~~ Okinawa ~~and~~ received the Bronze Star. After the war he spent his career with the family’s Latin American Coca-Cola bottling enterprises (later Panamerican Beverages / Panamco), traveling among plants in Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil. He died on 29 July 2015 in Coral Gables, Florida, at age 94.
