Kurt M. Gebel was born on 21 March 1920 in Hamburg, Germany, and grew up in New York City. He graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1937 and later studied at several institutions, including Brooklyn College, Northeastern University, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University.

Throughout his life, he studied~~ at ~~Brooklyn College and City College~~, ~~both in New York~~, ~~Northeastern University in Boston, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University~~ and ~~last at Wilson College~~ in ~~Chambersburg~~.

Gebel enlisted on 30 December 1942. He spent two and a half years working in military intelligence at Camp Ritchie, graduated with Class 25, and later served in the European Theater during World War II.
