On this Memorial Day, let us remember those Ritchie Boys who died in Europe while serving our country and fighting to defend our freedoms. Ritchie Boy First Lt Nick C. Emanuel was born in Mannheim, Germany on July 5, 1924, and emigrated to the United States aboard the US Berengaria on December 6, 1936 with his mother and older brother. Nick enlisted in the US Army on July 26, 1943, despite not being a citizen. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. shortly after his enlistment. Emanuel was serving in the 82nd Airborne Division and was attached to the HQ Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment on 11 September 1944. As such he may have seen combat during the battle of The Bulge which erupted three months later. 1st Lt Emanuel was one of seven men killed on 14 March 1945 during a parachute demonstration jump when a C-47 lost power due to a thrown propeller sending the aircraft plunging through a group of descending parachutists. He is buried in the King David Cemetery, Putnam Valley, NY
