Bernard J. Gittelman (1925–2003) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 18.

Biography

Bernard Gittelman was a Ritchie Boy. Bernard Gittelman served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He received his initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He attended the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. In Chiseldon, England, he was trained in aerial photo interpretation. He saw action in the European Theater of Operations, including Holland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, France, and the Rhineland. Bernard served as a T/3 mostly with the 17th Airborne Division as part of a photo intelligence team. One of the missions was to fly from England to rescue the 101st Airborne at Bastogne. He also was part of a six-man photo intelligence team working with the Division Reconnaissance Company, leading patrols behind the Siegfried Line. He received the Infantry Badge and the Gliderman and Paratrooper Wings with the 17th Airborne Division. He attended the College of the City of New York following the war and then USC. He earned a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish in 1951 and a master’s degree in 1964. With the District, he served as an elementary school teacher, a master training teacher, and an assistant principal. He worked with the Developmental Reading Program in five elementary schools. He married in 1947. Bernard retired in 1980, and passed away April 13, 2003.
