John H. Kautsky (1922–2013) was a Ritchie Boy (from Austria) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 16.

Biography

"John Kautsky, born 1922 in Vienna, was the grandson of social democratic theorist Karl Kautsky and the nephew of economist and sociologist Benedikt Kautsky. After his escape from Austria," he started corresponding with 12 of his fellow classmates from the "Franz-Josef-Realgymnasiums" in Vienna (Stubenbastei). "In a total of 675 letters, they described their experiences of escape, their living conditions in exile - and in a few cases their return as a liberator as soldiers of the Allied Armies.

"After serving in the U.S. Army, John Kautsky attended Chicago and Harvard universities and became a professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Kautsky died on 13th. October 2013 at the age of 91 years. In 1994 he handed the letters to the archive for the history of sociology. They were the basis of exhibitions and research projects; the archive is currently planning to digitize the stock in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C."
