Stephen C. Lion (born 23 March 1916) was a Ritchie Boy (from Germany) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 9.

Biography

Lion was a Ritchie Boy. In 1944, he was being considered for the second Roberts Commission, aka the "Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program (MFAA)" According to documents, he was highly familiar with the art world, and a world traveler, having been to Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, England, Austria, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. Stephan was born March 23, 1916 in Munich, Germany, but was an Austrian citizen. He was educated in Vienna, and became a naturalized United States citizen on April 13, 1943. At the time he submitted his information to be considered, he was with the Thirteenth Army, Third Student Training Regiment, at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army as a Private in the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, at Camp Hale, Colorado. He completed basic training, and instructed in skiing. As a personnel clerk, he was assigned to processing of personnel work in the Service Record Section of the 87th Mountain Infantry Personnel Office. Preparations of plans and policies which supervised activities that concerned enlisted men of the Army as individuals. According with the kind request of Captain B. Major, Special Service Officer, Camp Hale, Colorado, he made an outline, and some suggestions in regard to organize a recreational activity within the camp, as well as in regard to the decorating of different localities. Many of his suggested points were carried out. Stephan had reading knowledge of Italian, Latin and Hungarian, and speaking knowledge of French and German. He also graduated from Camp Ritchie, and was in the process of almost completing officer candidate school at the time of his letters for consideration, which was dated December 23, 1943. Stephan passed away in 2009.
