George E. Shalhoup (5 November 1904 – 18 August 1999) was a Ritchie Boy (from Syria) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 2.

Biography

George Elias Shalhoup was a Ritchie Boy. George was born November 5, 1904 in a village in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. He emigrated with his family in 1914 at age 9 and became a U.S. citizen in 1928. He attended various Army schools during World War II including Cooks and Baker School, Fort Bragg, N.C., and received special training in combat intelligence at Camp Ritchie, MD. He saw combat in the North African campaign, where because of his command of the Arabic language, he specialized in intelligence activities among the Arabic speaking populations in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. He was discharged in 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. After the war, he returned to his hometown to work in the shoe industries. The city of Sanford appointed by the Town of Sanford to serve as a "Veterans Guidance Counselor" where he maintained an office to help returning war veterans, and/or their families with their claims with the U.S. government and the Veterans Administration. He maintained this office for two years and helped over 2,000 families in the Sanford area. Shalhoup served in the National Selective Service System and served as a member of Local Board No. 16 York County for over 21 years. He was awarded Certificates of Appreciation for "Service to the Nation" signed by three presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. He played tennis into his 91st year and also swam, biked, hiked and was a mountain climber. He wrote an autobiography that was printed and bound for relatives celebrating his 85th birthday. A copy also was presented to Goodall Library, Sanford. George Elias Shalhoup passed away August 18, 1999 at the age of 94.
