He saw action in the European Theater of Operations, including Holland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, France, and the Rhineland~~. Bernard served as a T/3 mostly with the 17th Airborne Division as part of a photo intelligence team~~. One of the missions was to fly from England to rescue the 101st Airborne at Bastogne. He also was part of a six-man photo intelligence team working with the Division Reconnaissance Company, leading patrols behind the Siegfried Line. He received the Infantry Badge and the Gliderman and Paratrooper Wings with the 17th Airborne Division. He attended the College of the City of New York following the war and then USC. He earned a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish in 1951 and a master’s degree in 1964.
