Edwin II Wolf (1911–1991) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 18.

Biography

Edwin II Wolf (1911-1991) was a rare-book bibliographer and a Ritchie Boy. Before entering the Army, he spent 13 years with the A. S. Rosenbach Company, where he worked with rare books and produced two bibliographical volumes and articles on rare books and archives. He was invited to teach bibliography at Bryn Mawr College in 1941-42 and was considered for curatorial work involving rare-book collections. He spoke French and German.

Wolf enlisted early in 1943, completed basic training in Louisiana, and took an Army Specialized Training Program course in Columbia, Missouri, specializing in Central and Southern Europe. Camp Ritchie records identify him as a corporal in Company G, 2nd Training Battalion, Section 7D. The gallery also includes a 4 January 1945 memorandum recommending Sergeant Wolf for consideration by the Civil Affairs Division because of his knowledge of books and manuscripts.

The related correspondence shows that the American Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in War Areas considered whether his skills might be useful, but also records that the Army would not act on recommendations of noncommissioned men for that work. These documents therefore establish that Wolf was recommended for possible cultural-property work, not that he served with the commission. He was married and had three children.
