Biography
Gordon Davis Shingleton was a Ritchie Boy. This is another long one, but plenty of great information! Gordon Davis Shingleton was born February 29, 1924, at Baltimore, Maryland. After finishing high school with highest honors, in Charleston, West Virginia, he entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1941, but his college education was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted December 8, 1942 and was called to duty June 17, 1943. After basic training he was sent to Camp Ritchie, Maryland, Military Intelligence Training Center, where he was trained as a Photo Interpreter. He went to England larch 21, 1944, and there was assigned to the Historical Section Special Troops, ETC, located first in London but later in Paris after the liberation. He returned to the States January 31, 1946, and, after a brief, temporary duty with the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department at Washington, he was honorably discharged from active service, but remained in the Reserves as Technician, 4th Grade. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Ribbon, Victory and Army Reserve Medals, and a Citation. Re-entering M.I.T. as a Junior, Mr. Shingleton received a B.S. Degree in mid-year 1947, with a major in Industrial Engineering in the Chemical field. He was first employed by National Carbon Company at Niagara Falls, Kew York, as Quality Control Engineer. Through evening courses at Buffalo University, he received Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Statistics. Shingleton was married July 31, 1949, to Phyllis Jean Nall in the First Methodist Church at Clarksburg, West Virginia. She was born February 17, 1927, daughter of Dr. and Martha (Thompson Hall, of Clarksburg). She was a graduate of Wilson College, with a major in biology. In 1954 they moved to Lutherville, Maryland, where Mr. Shingleton was employed by Crown, Cork, and Seal Corporation as Senior Engineer in Research and Development in Baltimore. On April 3, 1959, he re-entered active military service as an active Reservist, in the grade of captain. He was assigned to Edgewood Arsenal as Executive Officer, Chemical Corps, Quality assurance Technical Agency. From there he went to Okinawa August 27, 1961, for a thirty month tour of duty as Deputy Chemical Officer of the Ryukyu Islands. His family followed later, and while there Mrs. Shingleton took an active part in the women's activities, serving as president of the Woman's Club and editor of their magazine, “Isle Tell". Captain Shingleton was promoted to Major in 1953. From April 1, 1964 to June 15, 1967 he was Chief of Command and Management Branch of the United States Chemical School at Fort McClellan, Alabama. While there he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and transferred in June to Picatinny Arsenal, at Dover, New Jersey, as Deputy Project Manager. In February 1970, he was assigned to a year's duty in Vietnam. at the Long Binh Supply Depot there he was first in charge of Quality Assurance and later of the Storage Division. He returned to the States February 19, 1971, and is at present at Fort George Meade, Maryland, as Deputy Chemical Officer, Headquarters, First Army. On August 16, 1987, LTC Shingleton received the Army Commendation Medal, an Oak Leaf Cluster, for his outstanding service at Fort McClellan and in January 1970, a second Oak Leaf Cluster for "“exceptional, meritorious service at Picatinny arsenal as Project Officer in the Mines Technical Division of the office of Project Manager, Material Command". In Vietnam he received a second Bronze Star medal. (Sec appendix). The permanent home of the family is was in Berkeley County, West Virginia, near Gerrardstown. Shingleton are members of the First United Presbyterian Church and have always been leaders in church and civic work. He has been an Elder in the church since 1950, serving on the Session wherever located. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution. Organized system for interpreting and classifying over 75,000 Signal Corps photos, and was responsible for correlating all photo information with official reports historics and manuscripts submitted from the European Theater of Operations to Historical Division, War Department, Special Staff from D-Day, 6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945, V. Was responsible for D-Day interview of combat photographer. This system of interpreting combat photos will be the basis of future investigations made by Historical Division of War Department, Special Staff," CITATION FOR BRONZE STAR MEDAL "Technician Fourth Grade Gordon D. Shingleton (Army Serial no. 11121625) Army of the United States, for meritorious service in connection with military operations, as Photo Interpreter, Historical Section, Headquarters European Theater of Operations, from 6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Shingleton displayed outstanding initiative, resourcefulness and devotion to duty in the pursuit of the tasks assigned to him. He established standard operating procedure for interpreting and classifying 70,000 photographs taken by official Army photographers and he further devised and put into operation a clear and definite index system which by permitting the immediate location of any photographic material, was a vast improvement on the existing facilities. The accomplishment of Technician Fourth Grade Shingleton reflects great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States. Entered military service from West Virginia." OKINAWA TOWN HONORS LOCAL ARMY CAPTAIN (June 14, 1962). A Hagerstown Anny Captain has been honored by the villagers of a community on the faroff Island of Okinawa, according to a special dispatch to the Daily Mail from Fort Buckner, Okinawa. The officer is Captain Gordon G. Shingleton, son of Mrs. Shingleton, 1710 Cathedral Ave. According to the dispatch, Capt. Shingleton "was honored by the village of Kawa-son on May 31 for his part in bringing water to the drought-stricken village last fall." The dispatch from Okinawa further says: “Working on his own time, Capt. Shingleton and nine other soldiers hauled 177,000 gallons of water to the village and the local school." Assigned to the U.S. Army, Ryukyu Islands Chemical Office, the captain entered the Army in 1943 and arrived overseas last August on this tour of duty. The 37-year-old officer is a 1942 graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge, Mass. and a 1954 graduate of the University of Buffalo. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. The Daily Mail, Hagerstown, Maryland Gordon passed away May 18, 2013 at the age of 89.
