Harold K. Hochschild (1892–1981) was an American metals executive, Adirondack conservationist, and Ritchie Boy (Class 4) who served as a lieutenant colonel with SHAEF and received the Silver Star.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Harold K. Hochschild was born in New York City in 1892, the son of Berthold and Mathilde Blumenthal Hochschild. He graduated from Yale University in 1912 and joined the American Metal Company, Ltd., becoming its president in 1934. He married Mary Marquand in 1941; they had one son, Adam.
During World War II he trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 4) and served about two years in Europe with SHAEF, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He received the Silver Star.
After returning to civilian life he remained on the American Metal Company board after retiring as president in 1957, founded the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake (opened 1957), chaired New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks (1969–1971), and wrote Township 34 (1952) and other Adirondack histories. He received honorary doctorates from St. Lawrence University, Hamilton College, and Princeton. He died in 1981.
