Max Horlick (1918–2018) was a Ritchie Boy (Class 19) who served on German IPW Team 414 and MFIU-1, and later worked in U.S. intelligence and international research.
Biography
Max Horlick was born in New Jersey to immigrant parents. He studied French at Rutgers University and trained at Camp Ritchie, graduating with Class 19 (MII French) on 13 July 1944 and later completing postgraduate IPW work associated with Class 21.
He served on German IPW Team 414 with Kurt F. Korf, Carl J. Kleinert, Peter M. Stern, David Koetser, and Israel Unterman. Field interrogation unit rosters list him with MFIU-1 as a technician third grade in February 1945 and as a technical sergeant by June 1945. He went overseas for the European campaign, including service connected with the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war he continued in intelligence and international affairs with the CIA and the Department of State, later directing international research work connected with the Department of Labor and Social Security. In 2007, at age 89, he received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in French literature. He published books including the novel The Agony of Victory (2011).
