Leonard A. Edmondson (12 June 1916 – 23 July 2002) was an American painter, printmaker, and educator who served in U.S. Army military intelligence in Europe (1942–1946), including Camp Ritchie Class 19, before a long California teaching and studio career.
Biography edit
Leonard Edmondson was born in Sacramento, California, on 12 June 1916. He studied at Los Angeles City College and then at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a B.A. in 1940 and an M.A. in 1942.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Corps in Europe from 1942 to 1946, training at Camp Ritchie (Class 19) and later working with MII teams. Wartime exposure to modern European art—especially Paul Klee—and spare-time visits to the Louvre while still stationed in France helped turn him from figurative work toward non-objective painting.
Returning to California in 1947, he began teaching at Pasadena City College and developed a Surrealist / Abstract Expressionist vocabulary in watercolor and printmaking. He later taught at the Otis Art Institute and (from 1964) chaired printmaking at California State University, Los Angeles until retiring in 1986; he also taught summers at UC Berkeley and at Pratt Institute. Awards included Tiffany Fellowships (1953, 1955) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1960). He published the treatise Etching in 1970 and was a founding member and president of the California Printmakers Society. He died in West Covina, California, on 23 July 2002.
