Henry F. “Hank” Hauser (18 May 1918 – 18 December 2006) was a Kerrville-born Ritchie Boy (Class 7) who served on MacArthur’s staff, retired as a colonel, and later helped identify Soviet missiles in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Biography

Henry F. Hauser was born on 18 May 1918 in Kerrville, Texas, to William Frank Hauser and Maria Ullmann. He graduated from Tivy High School in 1937 and played All-American guard and tackle on Texas A&M’s undefeated 1939 national championship team. His Class of 1941 was commissioned in June 1941; as an infantry second lieutenant he went to Camp Wolters, Texas, where he married Jane Freeman.

In World War II he served on General Douglas MacArthur’s staff in the South Pacific after Camp Ritchie (Class 7) and other assignments including Fort Riley and United Forces in Austria. He retired as a colonel on 1 June 1961 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. His decorations included the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medals, American Defense Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with campaign stars, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

In civil service he worked aerial surveillance imagery and was instrumental in identifying Soviet missiles during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later served Sierra Vista as mayor (1969–1971) and in other civic offices. He died on 18 December 2006 in Sierra Vista at age 88.
