William Carmalt Scull Heyl (24 March 1924 – 15 May 1949) was a Class 16 Ritchie Boy from the Philadelphia area who served in counterintelligence with XX Corps in Patton’s Third Army.

Biography

William Carmalt Scull Heyl was born on 24 March 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of John B. and Mrs. Heyl of Ardmore. He studied international affairs and Russian with an eye toward diplomatic service (contemporary notices place him at Stanford; other family notes mention Princeton at enlistment).

He entered active duty on 3 March 1943 at New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, took infantry basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, and was screened at Virginia Polytechnic Institute before Camp Ritchie (Class 16). Overseas from May 1944, Heyl served as a staff sergeant in the Counter Intelligence Corps with XX Corps—the “Ghost Corps” of Patton’s Third Army—in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. Pennsylvania compensation records list honorable discharge on 9 November 1945 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

Heyl died on 15 May 1949 at University Hospital in Philadelphia after a long illness; he was twenty-five. He was unmarried and left no children. Survivors included his parents and a sister, Mary Katherine Heyl.
