Virgil Standish “Stan” Mallory (14 July 1919 – 15 February 2003) was a United States Army intelligence soldier who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 17 and later became a University of Washington geology professor.
Biography edit
Virgil Standish Mallory was born on 14 July 1919 in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up in East Orange. A pianist from age five, he won an Oberlin College scholarship in piano while majoring in geological sciences and played alto sax in a high-school jazz band that sometimes sat in with Duke Ellington’s orchestra.
During World War II he served in Army specialized training in German area and language at Amherst College (1943) and in military intelligence at Camp Ritchie (1944, Class 17), serving as a staff sergeant in the Pacific theater.
After the war he finished at Oberlin, married Miriam (“Mimi”), and earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in paleontology at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the University of Washington faculty in 1952, later becoming professor and curator of paleontology and geology at the Burke Museum. Mallory died on 15 February 2003 in Seattle.
