Morris Olderman was a United States Army Private First Class who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 20.

Biography

Morris “Murray” Olderman was born on 27 March 1922 in Spring Valley, New York. He studied journalism at the University of Missouri and served in its field-artillery ROTC unit.

Olderman enlisted in the Enlisted Reserve Corps in August 1942 and entered active duty in March 1943. After artillery training and a year of French study at Stanford through the Army Specialized Training Program, his language skills brought him to Camp Ritchie (Class 20). He was commissioned through Infantry Officer Candidate School and went overseas in 1945, joining the 65th Infantry Division in Austria. Olderman served briefly as a military governor, wrote awards citations, and then joined the U.S. Detailed Interrogation Center, where he edited interrogation reports used in preparing the Nuremberg trials. He left the Army as a first lieutenant in May 1946.

Olderman became an award-winning syndicated sports cartoonist and columnist whose work appeared in hundreds of newspapers. He also wrote numerous books, including A Year Apart, based on wartime letters to his wife. He died on 10 June 2020.
