Max Oppenheimer, Jr (1917–2014) was a United States Army Private who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 9. Max enlisted at Los Angeles, California.

Biography

Max Oppenheimer Jr. was born on 27 July 1917 in New York. He spent his childhood in Hamburg, Germany, moved with his family to Paris at thirteen, and returned to the United States in 1935. He earned degrees from New York University and UCLA before entering the Army.

Oppenheimer graduated from Camp Ritchie (Class 9) on 18 August 1943 and became a master sergeant that October. Initially assigned to an order-of-battle team in England, he served in military intelligence from Utah Beach through France, Belgium, and Germany, participating in five campaigns and witnessing the liberation of the Nordhausen concentration camp and the meeting with Soviet forces on the Elbe. He rose from private to first lieutenant by 1945.

After earning a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1947, Oppenheimer taught foreign languages at several universities. Recalled to the Pentagon during the Korean War, he served on the General Staff from 1951 to 1956 and as a CIA intelligence officer from 1956 to 1958. He retired from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1976 as professor emeritus and died in 2014.
